I made a jalapeno cornbread for Monday morning’s breakfast, which got rave reviews from most of the customers. A couple missed their morning sweet. To those I promised cinnamon muffins with white chocolate chips the following day. Only Sam was quiet. He was rather embarrassed about the previous evening. Like Marty had told me, her goons-for-hire had bullied their way into his home and held him at gunpoint while Marty had been threatening to kill me.

“I’m so sorry, Zofia,” he said for the second time. “I can’t even identify them, they wore ski masks.”

“Sam, I’m fine, you’re fine,” I said in a low voice. I didn’t like seeing him worried. It made him look fragile, vulnerable. “I think I got Marty to get out of town. If she did kill Feliz’s husband, there’s no proof. The cops can’t legally keep her in New Orleans unless they want to bother with a material witness warrant, I think. From the way Detective Levin was talking, I bet he’d rather she just went away.”

I changed the subject. “You know, it’s been a week since the delivery. You’d think we’d have heard something by now.”

“Why not ask Feliz? Wouldn’t the police tell her?”

“She doesn’t want to know. She didn’t even go to his funeral.” But her sister did. I knew that was important somehow, but I couldn’t yet put my finger on why.
